The book called Michael D. Lyman. Organized Crime (7th ed. 2019) is required. Consider the reasons why organized crime exists. Consider some of the different organized crime groups we have discussed in the class (Mafia, Gangs, Drug Dealers, etc). This final essay should incorporate outside materials, so the works cited should include no less than 4 sources, properly cited. These must all be scholarly sources. Sources in excess of four can be from non-scholarly sources (popular websites, dictionary definitions, etc.). The rest must be books, academic journals, or news media. In an essay no more than 7 pages in length: Describe one criminal organization. Where is it? How was it founded? Why does it exist (in your opinion, based on research)? What is its purpose? What is the perception of this organization by outsiders? How are members perceived? What are the advantages or disadvantages of joining the group? How is this organization criminal? What role does it play in the community? What laws does it violate? What rules does the organization enforce? How does it maintain power? Why does this organization remain powerful? or alternatively, how did this organization lose power? What is the organization’s relationship to the government? Why is this organization important and why does it continue?
