Select an image that you think is representationally “rich.” This can be an advertising image, a photograph, movie or TV still, or a digital image that you come across. Drawing on material from Part III of this course (“Theorizing Media Representation”), conduct a textual analysis of the image to showcase how meaning is embedded in the visual text. You should focus not only on what the image means, but how it conveys meaning through the coding of visual information and the reliance on general cultural and linguistic signs. You should draw on either the concept of the gaze or the concept of Orientalism in developing your analysis. Use evidence from the image itself to support all interpretive claims. Make reference to relevant readings from Part III throughout your analysis.
