Dichotomy is a word that comes to my mind whenever the subject of culture comes up especially in the U.S. Dichotomy, in other words, means division, polarity, or split but at the same time, it is also closely linked to words like oppression, privilege, bigotry, and so on. We often learn more about this issue in the media, but I believe these issues should not have a place in healthcare. As nurses, we pledged the Nightingale pledge and we swore to work for the welfare of those placed under our care (Miracle, 2009). To achieve the best for our patients, it is important that we learn and observe cultural competence when dealing with every patient placed under our care. Cultural competence according to Ball et al (2019), is a process that involves the recognition of one’s own culture, biases, and values and the use of effective patient-centered communication.
