Dictionaries – a strategy used to help develop vocabulary. A notebook with alphabetized pages can be used to keep in the student’s desk. The student enters a new word into the dictionary along with the definition, a picture, and a sentence using the word. Vocabulary Cards – A strategy used to learn new vocabulary words. Usually the card will have the word, the definition, and a picture on one side and the word, picture, and a sentence using the word on the other side. Word walls – A form of vocabulary development in which words are added after initial instruction for students to refer to when reading and writing. I chose these three strategies I found in the GCU Student Success Center that I have and would utilize to teach vocabulary. I am currently working as a 7th grade resource teacher and I provide each of my students with a dictionary that they are able to add new words to and access when they do not know how to spell particular words while writing. I also have a word wall in my classroom that contains words we have learned in our reading curriculum. However, I feel like just simply presenting the word does not necessarily support understanding of the definition for students. I like the vocabulary cards because these contain the word, definition, picture and the word being used in a sentence. My daughter did a similar activity last year as a 5th grader and she aced all of her vocabulary tests at the end of the week because the words were ingrained in her head after using this strategy. The cards would be effective specifically for ELLs because it provides a visual to help remember the word and the vocabulary word being used in context.
