Consider a conflict that you have experienced that, looking back, you believe rooted in intercultural misunderstanding.
After the introduction, briefly describe the conflict, then analyze its underlying complexities using concepts from Jackson’s chapter on conflict in addition to others you find useful.

Pay particular attention to how gaps in cultural understandings and expectations contributed to the conflict’s causes, progress, and outcome.

More Details:

After losing an important deal in India, a business negotiator learned that her counterpart felt as if she had been rushing through the talks.

The business negotiator thought she was being efficient with their time.

Their cultures have different views on how to conduct negotiations, and in this case, the barrier prevented a successful outcome. In this useful cross cultural conflict negotiation example, we explore what this negotiator could have done differently to improve her negotiation skills.

More so, research shows that dealmaking across cultures tends to lead to worse outcomes as compared with negotiations conducted within the same culture.

The reason is primarily that cultures are characteriz ed by different behaviors, communication styles, and norms.

As a result, when negotiating across cultures, we bring different perspectives to the bargaining table, which in turn may result in potential misunderstandings. Misunderstandings can lead to a lower likelihood of exploring and discovering integrative, or value-creating, solutions.

Let’s talk about the main causes of cross cultural negotiation failure.

Cultural conflict in negotiations tends to occur for two main reasons.

First, it’s fairly common when confronting cultural differences, for people to rely on stereotypes.

Lastly, stereotypes are often pejorative (for example Italians always run late), and they can

lead to distorted expectations about your counterpart’s behavior as well as potentially costly misinterpretations.

One of the cornerstones of a vibrant democracy is citizens’ ability to influence government through voting.

In order for that influence to be meaningful, citizens must send clear signals to their leaders about what they wish the government to do.

It only makes sense, then, that a democracy will benefit if voters have several clearly differentiated options available to them at the polls on Election Day.

Having these options means voters can select a candidate who more closely represents their own preferences on the important issues of the day.

It also gives individuals who are considering voting a reason to participate.

After all, you are more likely to vote if you care about who wins and who loses.

Do standardized tests to improve education?.

The thesis should be along the lines that standardized testing is necessary for education because of the need to understand where a child is in their academics but there has to be a way to improve the way we approach and use standardized tests.

Of course, there can always be approval on the thesis to fit the research that is found.

More Details:

Teachers’ success is partially measured by their students’ scores on standardiz ed tests. However, these scores are dependent on all of the students’ teachers combin ed – not just on a singular teacher’s performance.

Studies have shown that standardized test scores are not a good predictor for teacher effectiveness, yet most states use them as an evaluative tool for teachers.

In fact, states like New York have proposed to increase the weight of this tool on evaluating teacher performance to 50%. Such a system that punishes and rewards teachers based on test scores won’t contribute to better education for students.

Standardized tests ensure the education level in America is up to par – for everyone.

The US’s Every Student Succeeds Act, which began in 2016, requires states to use proficiency on standardized exams as a method of holding elementary, middle and high schools accountable for their students’ success.

Additionally, this was intended to close the gap between minority and poverty-strick en students with those from higher-income families.

Also, not only do standardized tests give every student the opportunity to learn the same material as their peers in other schools, but state funding laws incentivize schools to ensure every student does well on these exams.

More so, as Washington State’s Senator Patty Murray said about education laws, “We know that

if we don’t have ways to measure students’ progress, and if we don’t hold states

accountable, the victims will invariably be the kids from poor neighborhoods, children of color, and students with disabilities.”

More Details:

The college football season in the US officially started a couple of weeks ago, with a flurry of games captivating the attention of fans nationwide.

The level of attention given to college sports in America can be baffling to an outsider. Not only do games attract massive crowds (sometimes nearing 100,000),

they are also shown on television, follow ed by hundreds of thousands of people

It may be early days, but this season’s potential winners and losers are already beginning to emerge,

The extremely high level of attention and interest in college sports such as american football and basketball means the NCAA, the non-profit organization responsible for managing college competitions, is hardly short of money.

According to CNN, revenues from broadcasting rights and ticket sales were estimated

to be somewhere around the US$3 billion mark in 2014.

However, none of this money finds its way to the athletes themselves. By contrast, college coaches and NCAA employees’ salaries aren’t capp ed.

The debate about whether student athletes should be paid rears its head every year, with the most common arguments made against doing so pointing to the fact college-level sport is suppose d to be an amateur enterprise.

It may attract large amounts of attention and financial investment, but – the argument goes

Reflect on whether Bed Bath & Beyond is going out of business in the recent future?

Bed Bath & Beyond’s earnings report could have been called Bed Bath & Brag,” according to 2004 the New Jersey newspaper.

The Record in April However, Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) had the performance to back up its boastfulness. Since going public in 1992, the home goods retailer, based in Union, New Jersey, had never missed an earnings estimate.

For fiscal year 2003 (ending February 29, 2004) BBBY announced net income of $399 million on net sales of $4.5 billion, representing 22 percent growth in revenue and 32 percent growth in income over the previous fiscal year.

Reflect on whether Bed Bath & Beyond is going out of business in the recent future? Is this beyond profitable scale?

More Details:

When Target merchandising veteran Mark Tritton was tapped by Bed Bath & Beyond to

lead its turnaround plan, many expected he would deploy some of the strategies that were successful at the big-box retailer.

Now, nearly a year after his arrival, Tritton is meeting with investors to lay out a three-year road map for the company, offering fresh financial targets and the strategies to get there.

Bed Bath & Beyond said Wednesday it expects same-store sales — which track revenue online and at stores open for at least 12 months — to be “stable” in fiscal 2021, and rise in the low-to-mid single digits by 2023.

Tritton already has overhaul ed the management team, outlin ed plans to shut underperforming locations and said the company is looking to gain market share in key categories like home, beauty and baby — which have become even more important for consumers during the coronavirus pandemic.

Bed Bath & Beyond shares were falling more than 11% Wednesday, amid a broader

market selloff.

Contact Precautions

CDC recommends the use of Contact Precautions in inpatient acute care settings for patients known to be colonize d or infect ed with epidemiologically important multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) including MRSA.

From 2005 to 2014, the overall estimated incidence of invasive MRSA infections from normally sterile sites (i.e., blood, pleural fluid, etc.) in the United States declined by 40% and the estimated incidence of invasive hospital-onset MRSA infections declined by 65%.

More so, interventions designed to decrease risk of device and procedure-associated infections and interventions to reduce transmission, like Contact Precautions and hand hygiene, both likely contributed to these decreases.

Also, the relative contribution of Contact Precautions in comparison to other interventions is unknown.

In the past 5 years, more than a dozen studies, review articles, and editorials have sought to address whether Contact Precautions should continue to be recommended for endemic MDROs like MRSA.

The impact of discontinuing Contact Precautions for MRSA-colonized or infected

patients has been assesse d primarily in single-center studies using lower quality quasi-

experimental designs that have not identified changes in MRSA infection or acquisition rates.

These studies likely underestimate the impact of discontinuing Contact Precautions, including the effect on downstream adverse events (e.g., post-discharge infections).

Based on the current evidence, CDC continues to recommend the use of Contact Precautions for MRSA-colonized or infected patients.

Lastly, CDC will continue to evaluate the evidence on Contact Precautions as it becomes available. In addition, CDC continues to work with partners to identify and evaluate other measures to decrease transmission of MDROs in healthcare settings.

What is Team Building?

Team building refers to the activities undertaken by groups of people in order to increase their motivation and boost cooperation.

Many people use the phrases “team building” and “teamwork” interchangeably.

However, they are two distinct concepts. While team building places emphasis on the creation of groups, teamwork emphasizes the functions of these groups.

Although team building activities are meant to increase cohesiveness and cooperation, many employees don’t understand how spending a day playing games can help them bond.

The truth is, how managers use team building in their organizations helps to shape their employees’ attitudes towards the process.

As such, leaders should seek to understand team building better as it will help increase their effectiveness. More specifically, leaders should be interested in learning the characteristics that make great teams and the techniques and relevance of team building.

What Makes a Team Effective?

More so, many studies have been conducted to establish what an effective team looks like. Most of these studies agree that the following traits are the most important for team building:

Making the goals clear is crucial to the success of any project. It means that every leader should start by providing comprehensive explanations of how each team member’s actions help in achieving the main goals.

Also, apart from making the goals known, leaders also need to establish the specific activities that members should prioritize.

This way, every member knows exactly when and where his help is required.

Concerts, sports games, and political rallies can have very large crowds. When you attend one of these events, you may know only the people you came with.

Yet you may experience a feeling of connection to the group.

Also, you are one of the crowd. You cheer and applaud when everyone else does.

More so, you boo and yell alongside them. You move out of the way when someone needs to get by, and you say “excuse me” when you need to leave. You know how to behave in this kind of crowd.

It can be a very different experience if you are travelling in a foreign country and find yourself in a crowd moving down the street.

You may have trouble figuring out what is happening. Is the crowd just the usual morning rush, or is it a political protest of some kind?

Perhaps there was some sort of accident or disaster. Is it safe in this crowd, or should you try to extract yourself?

Research negative and positive effects of social media on issues like antisocial behavior

Research negative and positive effects of social media on issues like antisocial behavior, anxiety and depression.

More Details:

Objective

Also, the aim of this systematic review was to identify and summarize research examining depression and anxiety in the context of SNSs.

It also aimed to identify studies that complement the assessment of mental illness with measures of well-being and examine moderators and mediators that add to the complexity of this environment.

Methods

A multidatabase search was performed. Papers published between January 2005 and June 2016 relevant to mental illness (depression and anxiety only) were extracted and reviewed.

Results

In addition, positive interactions, social support, and social connectedness on SNSs were consistently related to lower levels of depression and anxiety, whereas negative interaction and social comparisons on SNSs were related to higher levels of depression and anxiety.

More so, SNS use related to less loneliness and greater self-esteem and life satisfaction. Findings were mix ed for frequency of SNS use and number of SNS friends.

Also, different patterns in the way individuals with depression and individuals with social anxiety engage with SNSs are beginning to emerge.

Conclusions

The systematic review revealed many mixed findings between depression, anxiety, and SNS use.

Additionally, methodology has predominantly focused on self-report cross-sectional approaches; future research will benefit from leveraging real-time SNS data over time.

The evidence suggests that SNS use correlates with mental illness and well-being; however, whether this effect is beneficial or detrimental depends at least partly on the quality of social factors in the SNS environment.

Lastly, understanding these relationships will lead to better utilization of SNSs in their potential to positively influence mental health.

Evaluate the possibility of the United States adopting a carbon tax to control pollution.

In other words, using the experience of British Columbia’s adoption of a carbon tax analyze if a similar policy is possible in the United States.

You should also consider the outcome of Ballot Initiative #1631 in Washington state in the 2018 elections.

Think about these questions when applying the BC experience to the United States. How do politics and economics play a role in policy making on climate change?

What design elements of the carbon tax do officials need to consider that might impact its political acceptability by the public?

What are the trade-offs made by Premier Gordon Campbell in order to gain acceptance, and would similar decisions work in the American situation?

Are the characteristics of the political system that made the carbon tax possible in British Columbia transferable to the United States?

More Details:

Any debate about global warming leads inevitably to proposals for a carbon tax as one of the most powerful tools in the arsenal to combat it.

In January 2019, a bipartisan group in the US House of Representatives

introduced H.R. 763, the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act of 2019, which

would pave the way for a carbon tax on fuels that emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

But, because everybody would face the same price increase, low-income households

would be hit harder than richer households, making the measure no less politically

treacherous than past proposals that have come and go ne.
