Judicial review is the power of the courts to declare that acts of the other branches of government are unconstitutional, and thus unenforceable.

For example if Congress were to pass a law banning newspapers from printing

information about certain political matters, courts would have the authority to rule that this law violates the First Amendment, and is therefore unconstitutional.

State courts also have the power to strike down their own state’s laws based on the state or federal constitutions.

Today, we take judicial review for granted. In fact, it is one of the main characteristics of government in the United States.

On an almost daily basis, court decisions come down from around the country striking down state and federal rules as being unconstitutional.

To keep things organized, I want you to break your essay into three sections:

The first paragraph should provide information on the article’s title, its place of origin, its author, and its date of publication.

More so, it should also provide a basic summary of the article, highlighting the author’s main points and most significant ideas. In this way, it will be like the first paragraph from your previous essay.

Also, the second through fourth paragraphs should provide a more detailed analysis of the article. Here, you will have an opportunity to analyze on three techniques that Simmons employs in his article.

You might want to analyze his purpose, intended audience, organization, thesis statement, anecdotes, or repetition.

Do not switch to a different technique mid-paragraph. The fifth paragraph will give you an opportunity to evaluate the article.

Some questions you might want to consider: Did I learn anything new from this article? Was the article interesting?

Our task at Abolition Democracy 2/13 was to critically engage the theoretical framework of “abolition democracy”—the framework coined by W.E.B. Du Bois in his magnum opus,

Black Reconstruction in America, and reimagined by Angela Davis in her eponymous interviews with Eduardo Mendieta in 2005.

The notion of abolition democracy in Du Bois’s writings is at times ambiguous, seemingly referring on certain occasions to an ideal or ambition of racial justice and equality,

but at other times remaining tethered to a more historical and interest-convergence analysis.

On the one hand, abolition democracy is often describe d as an enlightene d, righteous, just ambition, “base d on freedom, intelligence and power for all men,” in Du Bois’s words;

When Bernard Madoff started his investment company, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities, LLC, he conducted business honestly.
