why do you think students should know about historical examples of homosexuality? Or about the AIDS epidemic?

The New Jersey Legislature passed a law in January, 2019 mandating that every middle school and high school in the state teach students about the “political, economic, and social contributions” of LGBTQ people. The law stipulates that the curriculum should include both “stand-alone lessons” and lessons that integrate the contributions of LGBTQ individuals/groups into larger history and social studies lessons. At this point, the legislature has given no specific guidelines on how to teach this material. On top of that, they anticipate some push back from parents who do not believe the schools should be teaching LGBTQ history. School boards will meet and discuss, and receive input from experts. For your final exam, propose two curriculum ideas: a “stand-alone lesson” as well as a lesson that integrates the experiences and contributions of LGBTQ individuals/groups into a larger history or social studies lesson. For your “stand-alone curriculum,” explain why you selected your topic; for example, why do you think students should know about historical examples of homosexuality? Or about the AIDS epidemic?
