Euripides’ original audience (like us) would have experienced the Trojan Women very much with the Iliad in the back of their minds. Focusing on the character of Hecuba and/or Andromache, think about how Euripides has followed Homer’s Iliad and how he has departed from it. What details in Hecuba’s or Andromache’s characterization in Homer has Euripides kept or even emphasized? What has he changed? What artistic goals did he have in making such choices in his treatment of this mythological material?
