 Raise the Red Lantern Released in 1991 Directed by Yimou Zhang Cast: Gong Li as Songlian, the (new and) fourth mistress/sister. There are three other mistresses or sisters. They are numbered with the First Mistress being the eldest. The Second Mistress is middle aged. The Third Mistress was a famous opera singer and the Fourth Mistress, a former university student. There is a servant who is named Yan’er who has caught the eye of the Master. And of course there is the Master. The topics of this assignment are story conflict and the social condition of the concubine. The story takes place in 1920’s China. Story conflict is made up of opposing forces of typically good vs. evil. Characters are usually associated with these forces. It generally involves a power struggle. It can be a condition or problem that must be solved and a person is instrumental in achieving its solution or creating and aggravating the problem. This story is full of conflict based on power struggles. Conflict is the key to a story being told. Every film must have a problem or problems to solve. The characters within a film have the need to get power to solve problems. The protagonist is usually the positive force in a film. The antagonist is the negative force.
