Answer two (2) of the questions from section I, and the question in section II. a) Please type your papers, double-spaced, with a standard font in eleven point or twelve point. Write a maximum of 2 pages on each of the questions in section I, and a maximum of 3 pages on the question in section II. The maximum total number of pages is 7. Please do not exceed this limit. b) Note: You are expected to work alone on the take-home. You may come to my office and ask questions about the exam, but you should not discuss any part of the exam with other members of the class. Please consult the sources that we have read during the semester, and, when possible, refer to the primary sources that we have read to support your arguments. Do not use any secondary sources other than the ones that we have read for the course, including any sources that are on Canvas. When you do use information from these texts, please refer specifically to your source. You do not need to use footnotes; references in parentheses are fine. In section II, there is no need to refer to sources, but indicate your knowledge of the sources that we have been reading. Remember that representing someone else’s work as your own is a violation of the Tulane Honor Code. I. Answer two (2) of these questions. [30% each] 1) On the basis of Tacitus’ Agricola and the Annals, discuss why the relationship between the senate and the emperor was so strained. Would Tacitus think that there could be a good emperor? How in his view should senators act under the Principate? 2) What do we learn about Pliny’s values as an aristocrat from the letters that we have read? Pick out at least two themes from the letters to discuss. 3) What do we learn about the situation of Jews in Alexandria from ‘Letter of Claudius to the Alexandrians’? II. Answer this question. [40%] 1) Imagine that you are Galerius Maximus, the proconsul of Africa in 258, and that you are writing your memoirs in which you justify the most important decision of your career, to order the execution of Cyprian, bishop of Carthage. Explain your decision to do this, drawing on historical precedents for your actions. As an upper-class Roman, you are well versed in Roman literature, and you will have read Virgil’s Aeneid, Tacitus, and Pliny, especially his letters concerning the treatment of Christians. You are also aware of the changes in the nature of the Roman Empire that have taken place since the reign of Augustus. What would you draw on from your knowledge of these authors and of Roman history to justify your actions?
