We have written, standardized, and aligned curricula and we have tested, tested, and tested our kids. We have benchmarks and outcomes written all over the building/websites/manuals and emphasized at staff meetings. We have not, however, seemed to put enough stock into the non-instructional aspects of teaching. As we all know, a teacher is a leader, community member, pseudo parent, mentor, and the list goes on and on. We don’t get trained to fill these roles and we don’t get rewarded for them. But, we often can’t get to the standardized outcomes until we fill the non-instructional roles of the job! Use these prompts to find the research articles- The Beale-Spencer article is a thick read, I must say, but the idea of “bravado” as a student’s coping mechanism is an interesting discussion to have. What is bravado? Why is it a coping strategy? And, what are protective factors? How can you be a protective factor in a kid’s life?

1. On what date in the Gregorian calendar (the one we use) does this series of monuments begin? End? 2. How would you divide this series of monuments into groups of related monuments (Look at their locations in the site and at the earliest dates they mention). How many years are spanned by each group? 3. How many different dates are associated with the “vulture” glyph? The “fish head” glyph? How do these dates relate to the dates of the monuments on which they are included? 4. How many years separate the earliest date mentioned in each group of monuments from the carving of the latest monument in the group? What do such lengths of time seem to correspond to? 5. How does all this relate to the scenes depicted in relief carving on the fronts of the monuments?

Primary research and analysis       You are asked under-take original research into the history and theory of interiors.  This means that you search for sources in the subject area that are from a particular point in time and constitute first-hand or “immediate” texts written by historical actors in the context of time and place.  One such a source, for example, would be Batty Langley’s Ancient Architecture restored and improved by a great variety of grand and usefull designs, entirely new, in the Gothick mode…(London : s.n., 1742) (Links to an external site.). Another primary source would be Candace Wheeler’s volume Principles of Home Decoration, With Practical Examples, (New York: Doubleday, Page and Company, 1903).  Once you have found a text, your task is to read it carefully and closely and then to offer analysis of it.  The analysis turns on asking questions of the text (What is its purpose? What were the circumstances of its creation?  What is it saying to its audience? And what are its implications in the context of the creation of interiors). Your essay must be a work of criticism and interpretation (informed, sustained and substantiated). Must use primary resource.
